West Worthing Club Named as Sussex Sustainability Award Winner

We’ve been working hard to improve our eco-friendliness on and off court, and we are thrilled to be named Sussex Winner of the LTA Protect Where We Play Award 2026, at the recent Tennis Sussex Awards.

We are pleased to have won this award category, which recognises venues who are leading the way with environmental sustainability and by doing so, helping to secure the future of clubs like ours for generations to come.

How has the Club been making a difference?

From installing efficient LED floodlighting, solar-powered energy and smart switching, through to recycling tennis and padel balls, reducing plastic waste and supporting local suppliers – these are just a few ways that we have been implementing change and prioritising improving our energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Some of our strides have been enormous, and fundamentally game-changing, for our club in terms of reducing our carbon footprint, but also protecting our future by controlling some of our overhead costs. A standout improvement has been the reduction of our annual electricity consumption by 65% over the past decade. We have achieved this through careful decision-making when investing in new infrastructure or planning upgrades. Switching to LED floodlights, linking these lights to our court booking app and installing our 90 solar panels on our clubhouse roof have played a significant role.

But it’s not just the big ticket actions that have made the difference, we have also focussed on smaller changes too. Whether that’s recycling more of our waste, nurturing our habitat, going paperless where possible or promoting shared journeys, these all add up over time.

Our members have played an important part in helping us achieve our goals, for which we are very grateful…but we haven’t finished yet…..

So What’s Next?

Current projects on the go or under consideration include the installation of a smart irrigation system to help reduce our water consumption plus some imminent planting of over 200 trees around our grounds. The Woodland Trust has kindly donated these.

The winner of the County LTA Award will be considered for a Regional Award with the potential for a National Award.
