Juniors

Tennis members enjoy the use of seven all weather, floodlit hard courts, three indoor courts and ten grass courts, available during the summer. The Club caters for all ages abilities, from beginners through to Club, County and National standard, and from four-year old mini-tennis players to senior citizens.

To help new members integrate into the Club and meet existing members, Club sessions are hosted on Monday and Friday evenings and on Saturday afternoons.

The club runs a comprehensive coaching and competition programme for Juniors and a dedicated organised junior club afternoon every Monday from 5.00pm till 7.00pm.

New Junior Open Tennis Event - A successful first year

Over 70 players from across the south east converged on West Worthing Tennis and Squash Club for the first Junior Open Tournament. The tournament had 6 age group events and attracted a strong entry in its first year.

Stephen Holmes, General Manager and Tournament Referee commented “For our first year it was great to see a strong entry with some events attracting more players than had been expected. Our aim at the club is to make full use of our courts and this weekend we certainly did that. The high standard of play, competitiveness and the level of sportsmanship displayed by all entered was good to see. The club is making a name for itself as a top competitive venue for Tennis and Squash this new event will certainly find a place in the calendar for next year”.

At the end of three days of great competition there were some great finals:

Boys 12 and under Final
Piers Holt, aged 12 from Woldingham in Surrey beat Joshua Pollard, aged 12 from Hove 7-6(2), 6-4.

Boys 14 and under Final
Jesse Phitidis, aged 13 from Forest Row beat Reece Lane, aged 12 from Sharpthorne 6-0, 6-1.

Boys 16 and under Final
Alexandre Zoetelief Tromp, aged 14 from London beat Ross Batten, aged 15 from Wokingham in Berkshire 7-6(2), 6-0.

Girls 12 and under Final
Cathrine Hogh, aged 11 from Sevenoaks in Kent beat Luxmie Muhunthakumar, aged 11 from New Malden in Surrey 6-1, 6-7(1), 10-6.

Girls 14 and under Final
Tsvetomira Arsenova, aged 12 from Brighton beat Hannah Ferrett, aged 12 from Betchworth in Surrey 6-4, 6-1.

Girls 16 and under Final
Harriet Blacker, aged 15 from Bath beat Luna De Buretel, aged 14 from London 6-1, 6-1.

Summer Mini Tennis and Matchplay Events Schedules Published

Worthing College Tennis Academy Team in National Finals 19th - 20th March

The Academy Team are competing in the National Finals of the AEGON Senior Schools Championships.

The team of Daniel Bartlett, Dean Cronk, Jacques-Luc Wilson and Joe Boswell competed in a box league against teams from Torquay Boys Grammer, Birkdale School and Warwickshire College. The team finished second in the league with two wins and a narrow defeat to the eventual overall winners.

24 Mini Red Players Compete in Super Saturday Event

On Saturday 2nd January 24 young players competed in the first of 100 events being staged at West Worthing in 2010.

The Mini Red Super Saturday Festival gave a full day of competition to 24 youngsters from across the south east. The club’s three indoor courts were converted into an arena with 10 mini red courts set out around a viewing area for parents making it a great place to play and watch. On a very cold day an amazing 144 matches were played, giving every player 12 matches.

Playing matches in round robin groups of four players throughout the day gave every player the chance to win a group. We ended up with 14 group winners picking up gold medals. 5 players winning silver medals and 5 players taking home bronze medals.

Silver Medallists

Elijah Akehurst, Gus James, Joshua Parsons, Abigail Reinselde and Sam Wheatley.

Bronze Medallists

Toby Bull, Gigi Casey, William Northeast, Adam Walker and Justin Worthy.

Overall Winner and Runner-up

With a clean sweep of 12 straight wins Oscar Fowler took the winner’s trophy with Thomas Beutell-Triggs runner-up with 11 wins from 12 matches.

Competition

For members who wish to play competitive matches the Club enters teams in the National Club League and Sussex County Leagues. Internally throughout the year the club organise Adult Box Leagues for singles and doubles and ten Junior Singles Box Leagues. For team members Match Practice Night is held every Tuesday from 6.30 till 7.30 and is run by Jonathan Pocock our Head Coach.

The Club’s Closed Championships are held over a three week period in June each year with 17 different Level and Handicap Events, culminating in Finals Day which is followed by a club social event.

At regular intervals through the year the Club holds American Tournaments for those members who wish to socialise as well as play in a competition.

For one week in July the Club act as host to a division of the Ladies County Tennis Week.

In August The Sussex Open Tournament, part of The British Tour, is organised and played at the Club.

Juniors

The Club is an LTA Registered Mini Tennis Centre and also an accredited LTA Tennis Performance Centre.

Mini Tennis Groups for ages 4 – 7 years are held on Friday evenings from 4.00pm till 6.15pm on the Indoor Courts.

Junior Groups for ages 7 – 17 years are held on Saturday between 9.00am and 4.00pm.

Performance Squads are held on weekday evenings and are by invitation only.

Juniors from the Club have been successful in County, National and International Tournaments and have also represented both County and Country.

Monday evening from 5.00pm to 7.00pm is Junior Club Night!
